52 / MARCH.APRIL.2024 USICERINKS.COM Using Fun and Games to enhance skaters enjoyment and learning in group classes REAL PROGRAMS Successful programs to consider adopting PHOTOS: LEARN TO SKATE USA T here are many reasons why we decided to start skating and why we continue to skate, but there is one important reason that unifies us all—skating is fun! Learning through play and using one's imagination while on the ice can help enhance the learning experience. Here are a few ideas from skating instructors who truly enjoy teaching group lessons. Try to incorporate some of these ideas during your time on the ice to reinforce the mastery of each skill while having fun practicing them. Playing these games can help you retain information, and it encourages participants to step outside of their comfort zone. Be mindful of safety! These games can be altered to fit any skill and every age. Keep in mind the range of skills that all participants are capable of and customize appropriately. The complete Fun & Games manual can be found at usfigureskating.org within the National Skating Month Resources. What fun and creative ways does your program engage new skaters to help retention? Have a great idea for a game? Send your thoughts to the member services team at U.S. Figure Skating, we may include your game in the next edition of the Fun & Games manual. by HEATHER VAN HULLE, Manager, Membership Development Learn to Skate USA All About Play *TO SUBMIT A NEW GAME, CONTACT THE MEMBER SERVICES TEAM AT: memberservices@usfigureskating.org memberservices@learntoskateusa.com
