How did you first get into photogra- phy, specifically the shipping scene? I live on a lake with natural springs that do not freeze in the winter, leaving my shoreline open for visiting wildlife. With abundant opportunities presenting themselves, in 2015, I decided I needed to learn how to shoot wildlife techni- cally well. That experience evolved to a greater love of landscape photography and all things Lake Superior, including the magnificent ships that visit our ports. Is photography/videography your primary profession? If not, what is your "day" job? I work for a management consulting firm, which allows me to capture dra- matic cityscapes as part of my trav- els. My frequent commuting flights to Chicago resulted in the aerial image of the ports featured in the Winter 2024 issue of North Star Port magazine. What draws you to Great Lakes shipping and the working water- front for images? I particularly love to capture ships at night at our port and during periods of extreme winter scenes. How would you describe your pho- tography work? Someone once described my photog- raphy as "intrepid." I rather like that. I find that many of my favorite images attempt to capture astounding beauty t h a t e x i s t s fo r a re m a r ka b l y b r i e f period. Perfect impermanence. Do you have a personal connection to the lake from growing up in the region? Visiting? I was born in Duluth and have lived in this area most of my life. As a teen, I drove around Canal Park and Skyline Drive endlessly. When my husband and I first started dating, he lived on Park Point, and we often found ourselves waiting for the mighty Tregurtha to pass under the lift bridge on many late nights. Lake Superior has a special allure for so many people, and it's no different for me. Visiting its shores has a restorative effect; it is a remarkable place. Do you have other specialty focus areas in photography, as well? Particularly dramatic scenes including lightning, storm fronts, Lake Superior ice and waves, fireworks, astrophotogra- phy, cityscapes and the northern lights, of course. How do you know when you get a great shot? When I find myself holding my breath during the shoot. with Angela Botner angelabotnerphotography.com abotner IN FOCUS DULUTHPORT.COM | 17 Happy River sparkles under the Port of Duluth-Superior moonlight.
