FAir Fyi: indiAn relAy For many attendees, the Indian Relay is an exciting and highly dangerous tradition at the Eastern Idaho State Fair. Relay teams are comprised of three horses, one rider, one mugger and two holders. Each rider must ride bareback on all three horses. This competitive race begins with the rider mounting the first horse and, at the signal of the starter, racing around the designated track. As the riders and horses jockey for position while approaching the starting line at a full gallop, the team’s mugger catches his team’s running horse while the rider is dismount- ing. The rider then mounts the second horse, which is being held by one of the holders, and goes around the track again until he’s ridden all three horses. The first horse and rider to cross the finish line is the winner. The switches are extremely important. If the rider loses his horse, he’s automatically disqualified. Even if the rider doesn’t lose his horse, every millisecond it takes to mount the horse counts. The muggers have the most dangerous job, which is to catch a 1,200- to 1,500-pound horse coming head-on at a full run. The race takes less than 10 minutes to com- plete, but there are two other races involved: the Chief’s Race and the Lady’s Race. For the Chief’s Race, each rider is required to wear an Indian war bonnet while racing around the track. Only one horse and one trip is made, and riding bareback is required. The Lady’s Race is a one-horse, one-trip race, but sad- dles are optional. Beyond the GrAndstAnd The 2010 Eastern Idaho State Fair provides a full week’s worth of high-profile events and entertainment at the grandstand, but there also a number of must-see attractions elsewhere on the grounds.
