Check out the Exhibitor Handbook for the Fair’s annual flower exhibition contests at www.funatthefair.com. Meanwhile, consider these helpful hints: 1. Cut flowers and plant material in early morning or late in the after- noon. Place flowers and plant mate- rial immediately in deep warm water. Cut end of stem on slant. 2. Place in cool, dark room or out of drafts (from heat or air condition- ing). Do this for several hours or overnight. 3. Place water in container before starting design. Cut stems at an angle. 4. To keep designs fresh, avoid any leaves or petals under water 5. A spray is several flowers or clusters of flowers on a branched stem, each having its own stem. (Petunias, Cosmos) 6. A bloom is a single flower on one stem. (Zinnia, Dahlia, Rose) 7. A spike is lengthened flower clusters in which flowers are practically stemless. (Snapdragons, Gladiolus) Best in BreW This year marks the 16th annual High Desert homebrew competition, put on by the High Desert Brewers Association Homebrew Club, in conjunction with the Eastern Idaho State Fair. The event is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 5 at 10 a.m. in the Needlecraft Building. This competition is not your typical brew-ha-ha, however. It is the real deal, sanctioned by the American Homebrewers Association and Beer Judge Certification Program. Anyone 21 years of age or older may enter. All entries must be personally homemade by the entrant. Entrants are encouraged to call Bob Beckwith, 346-6870 to enter. (Entries will not be accepted the day of the competition.) 26 East idaho statE fair GuidE | 2010 sundAy, septemBer 5
