arrell Hazell is mostly settled into his office now
inside Mollenkopf, about seven months after being named Purdue's football coach.
But during this mid-July photo shoot, he lamented
the fact he hadn't yet gotten the large bust of Abraham
Lincoln in he'd ordered to be able to be prominent in the
shot. "That's my guy," Hazell said of the 16th President.
Still, Hazell's space is littered with cherished items,
perhaps most notably the photos he has scattered on his
desk and on tables of family, friends and inspirations.
The rings tucked firmly into a case on a shelf behind his
desk are from stints at Ohio State, Kent State, Penn and
West Virginia, denoting conference championships and
bowl appearances. He's worn all of them but won't put
another one on again until it says "Purdue." Still, Hazell
thinks there's value in displaying the rings. "I know it grabs
the eye of recruits, and it also reminds you what you're
working after," he said.
