Photo by Julie Gamble Year's building activity down for Rideau Lakes and TLTI Building permit activity in Rideau Lakes has hit a lean year with just $8,056,791 of construction value to the end of August compared to $12,085,356 last year. The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands (TLTI) has also seen a drop to September with $8,767,258 construction value compared to $10,548,409 last year. "While project values this year have been generally lower than last year, we do have some larger permits expected before the end of the year. These include the Kehoe Marina, a heli-tourism facility and a large private residence project," Chief Building Official Marcel Lavigne wrote in his August report. Township of Rideau Lakes Development Services Manager Mike Dwyer isn't predicting where 2013 numbers will end. "We are comparable to a multi-year average. Last year was exceptional. The numbers are driven by demand for construction. If you get a really cold and wet fall people may hold off building. We tend to see a bit of a push in the fall," said Dwyer. Both townships have seen a drop in new dwelling starts. Just 24 houses and cottages have been started in the first eight months of 2013to date in Rideau Lakes compared to 41 last year. Leeds and the Thousand Islands has had 12 house starts and one seasonal residence. Building fees collected in Rideau Lakes were $147,379 to the end of 24 Bedford St., Westport August compared to $217,642 last year. TLTI collected $123,930 to date compared to $150,039 last year.
