FILM guestlist.net Issue 55 / 2013 13 7 INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 It seems that the success of 2010's Insidious wasn't the lightning-in-a-bottle moment we had pegged it as, with its sequel storming to the top of the US box office and collecting a budget six times its predecessor in the process. August 21st It appears that The Land of the Free just couldn't wait for its predecessor's cliffhanger to be resolved, and quite rightly so. Having apparently arrived safely from spectre-ran parallel universe, The Further, to save his astral projecting son's soul, family man Josh Lambert is instead revealed to be possessed by a menacing old lady. The film's final reel saw him choking the jolly medium Elise (Lin Shaye) to death and startling wife Renai (Rose Byrne) before a cruel title card made it clear there was going to be a bit of a wait before we get any kind of closure. Bearing witness to the first film is a bit of a prerequisite, as Chapter 2 picks up almost exactly where the drama left off the first time round. What is more, is seems that Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell (appearing once again as a boffin specialising in the paranormal) display an admirable sense of respect considering what they created first time round. The film feels very much like a second chapter, and, at times, a re-tread as the Lamberts take up residence with Josh's mother (Barbara Hershey) only to find themselves plagued by creaking floorboards, runaway toys and darkly gurgling baby monitors. Taking cues from it's predecessor's more demented second half, Chapter 2 takes us back to The Further, as well expanding the series' mythology. Time travel is also thrown into the mix, almost exclusively in a bid to reintroduce Elise, in both her younger and older incarnations. Coming SooN The sledgehammer scares of the original felt oddly refreshing three years ago, particularly in contrast to the subtlety of the then-peaking Paranormal Activity franchise, and director James Wan doesn't deviate too far from that formula. It still proves effective, even if the result is eerily similar to Wan's other 2013 hit, The Conjuring. It is just as well that Insidious: Chapter 2 still supplies some rather interesting ideas; if a last minute flourish suggests a third installment is in the works, those opening numbers pretty much confirm it.
