HAVE YOU DREAMT OF A CAREER
IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
The fashion industry is a difficult career path to go down, with very
high competition, requiring commitment and sharp critical ability.
At the same time, it can be highly fascinating and alluring.
F
irstly, work out where you would like
to see yourself in a few years, after you
finish studying; this will help to choose
your sphere. Select from a choice of institutions and work out the financial issues
and the costs involved. Look out for your
preferred position in the industry, as there
are a whole lot of different choices, like
fashion illustrator, pattern cutting for designers, lingerie design… all of which are
unique in their own way.
There are loads of courses available out
there, but if you wish to pursue fashion as
a successful career, it will require unbelievable amounts of dedication and quite
large financial investment. If you are seriously considering it, then it is highly recommended to enrol in the more recognizable worldwide institutes, firstly studying
at undergraduate level and trying to get
as many connections within the industry
as possible - this will really help you in the
future. The courses available are quite di-

their students to get involved in projects
with well-known professionals and sponsors; some of the Central Saint Martins
students, for example, have worked
with designer houses such as Louis Vuitton and Paul Smith during their course. I
would then recommend continuing doing
a Masters after finishing your undergraduate programme, as this would provide full
immersion into the fashion world and all
its strict rules! It would also ensure plenty
of exposure to various companies, some
of which are willing to sponsor the most
talented and dedicated students.
While hunting for what is best suited to
you, it is better to look for a prestigious
establishment; however the options might
be overwhelming. For the top schools,
you would be required to pay a large tuition fee, with them charging – on average
- £9,000 per annum, not including ac-
