The fashion industry is a difficult career path to go down, with very high competition, requiring commitment and sharp critical ability. At the same time, it can be highly fascinating and alluring. F   irstly, work out where you would like to see yourself in a few years, after you finish studying; this will help to choose your sphere. Select from a choice of institutions and work out the financial issues and the costs involved. Look out for your preferred position in the industry, as there are a whole lot of different choices, like fashion illustrator, pattern cutting for designers, lingerie design… all of which are unique in their own way. There are loads of courses available out there, but if you wish to pursue fashion as a successful career, it will require unbelievable amounts of dedication and quite large financial investment. If you are seriously considering it, then it is highly recommended to enrol in the more recognizable worldwide institutes, firstly studying at undergraduate level and trying to get as many connections within the industry as possible - this will really help you in the future. The courses available are quite di- verse, although highly competitive. Institutes with a worldwide reputation enable their students to get involved in projects with well-known professionals and sponsors; some of the Central Saint Martins students, for example, have worked with designer houses such as Louis Vuitton and Paul Smith during their course. I would then recommend continuing doing a Masters after finishing your undergraduate programme, as this would provide full immersion into the fashion world and all its strict rules! It would also ensure plenty of exposure to various companies, some of which are willing to sponsor the most talented and dedicated students. While hunting for what is best suited to you, it is better to look for a prestigious establishment; however the options might be overwhelming.
