INDIE / ROCK 39 7 guestlist.net Issue 55 / 2013 Event preview: Emancipator @ XOYO Album of the month: Where The Heaven Are We American trip-hop producer, Emancipator, Brings His Stunning Live Show To XOYO 13th October Renowned for its heavy nights out, XOYO might not be the first place on your list of things to do on a chilled Sunday evening. However, on Sunday 13th October, make sure that this is an exception as Bird On The Wire are presenting the extremely talented American trip-hop producer, Emancipator. Having selfreleased his debut album Soon It Will Be Cold Enough in 2006, at the age of 19, the tracks from that album have since proved to be timeless. The instrumentation, agile beats, layered melodies and intoxicating samples are always really chilled-out and dreamy, so for a Sunday night out, this won't be a huge wild affair. Tickets are £11.50 so buy one early to avoid being disappointed. Four-piece band and Birmingham-based Swim Deep's debut album is amazing. i thought this band couldn't surprise me anymore with their music, and yet they have proven their a serious face in the Indie competition. It's characterised by the blissful delivery of Austin Williams' poetic, bittersweet lyrics, along with bright synth sounds, chimes, heavily backed up guitars and subtle yet tasteful drum beats. The single that first brought them to attention last year is the driving 'King City', which is a firm favourite. Synths chime in the background, accompanied by enthusiastic 'ooh oohs', as Williams yearns 'I wanna be everything that I'm not, I wanna be rich, I wanna show off'. The uplifting 'Honey' will make you smile and have you singing along with the brilliantly infectious chorus 'Don't dream in your sleep, it's just lazy'. Another standout track is the album's closer 'She Changes The Weather', which is mature sounding and is led by cooing, love-struck vocals. All in all, Where The Heaven Are We is a great album full of youthful, dreamy guitar pop and perfect for sound tracking laid-back summer days.
