Carbon Offsets thanks to Green Mountain Energy Company Your trip to SXSW Eco has a lighter footprint thanks to Green Mountain Energy Company, the nation's longest serving renewable energy retailer. For the third year in a row, Green Mountain is providing carbon offsets to help balance out the carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas emissions created by attendees' estimated travel. We're excited to partner with Green Mountain Energy Company to help green the conference and find solutions for a sustainable world. SXSW Eco Grant Program courtesy of Build A Better Planet Special thanks to Build A Better Planet for providing valuable educational opportunities by presenting the SXSW Eco Grant Program. We received many submissions for how to help the planet while building a stronger economy, and we are honored to host the grant recipients here at SXSW Eco 2013.View the winning submissions at Buildabetterplanet.org, and stay tuned to see one lucky winner who will participate in their upcoming TV talk show! Art Installation by Legacy and Chris Jordan Cigarette butts are the number one littered item found on America's beaches and waterways. Littered butts leach toxic chemicals and carcinogens, contaminate water sources, are poisonous to wildlife and are made of cellulose acetate, which does not readily biodegrade. That's why Legacy, a national public health nonprofit dedicated to reducing tobacco use in the US, partnered with renowned artist and cultural activist Chris Jordan to illustrate the problem of cigarette litter. This image depicts 139,000 cigarette butts—an amount equal to the number of cigarettes that are smoked and discarded every 15 seconds in the US It will be on display outside the exhibit hall throughout SXSW Eco.
