COMMENT the Groundsman November 2013 Contributors 3 From the Ricoh to Rio t this time of the year we enter conference season, and of course our own Conference and Awards at the Ricoh Coventry on 5 December. Congratulations to all finalists and a thank you also to all nominees who did not make the final shortlist. It is never easy when embarking on an awards programme - we try each year to hone the judging process, but we are proud that every award is judged now by practising groundsman, both professional and voluntary, who between them have many years' experience and give their time freely to assist in the judging process. This will be our fifth year of the IOG Conference and Awards and it goes without saying that without such proactive and generous sponsors we would not be able to provide such an event. Each year the profile of the event has improved to the point where we now enjoy regional and national press, radio and TV coverage. This in turn helps to raise the profile of the groundsman and illustrates the many fine examples of sports-turf management in the public consciousness. A Karen Maxwell Managing editor Colin Hoskins Features editor " Our host for the last four years has been drafted in by TalkSPORT to attend the draw in Rio, but we have lined up a fantastic replacement in Mark Clemmit who many will know from his regular feature reports on BBC1's The Football League show as well as regular reporting on BBC Radio 5 Live and in the North West region Paul Groves Product editor Among our presentations at the conference will be 'The Road to Brazil – preparing stadia and training pitches for the FIFA World Cup in 2014. This certainly will capture the moment as on the 6 December the draw for the World Cup takes place in Brazil. Mark Saggers, our host for the last four years, has been drafted in by TalkSPORT to attend the draw in Rio, but we have lined up a fantastic replacement in Mark Clemmit who many will know from his regular feature reports on BBC1's The Football League show as well as regular reporting on BBC Radio 5 Live and in the North West region. So the stage is set for a wonderful day and evening and we look forward to hosting you. And finally, with the Rugby League World Cup in full swing we acknowledge the grounds teams at the various stadia and training venues who once again are projecting the highest standards, and playing such a vital role in our ability to attract world class events to the UK.
