battling a bad elbow, but is also expected to play, though Iowa's expected to use multiple backs. R This will mark the final meeting between Purdue and Iowa as cross-over rivals in the Big Ten's outgoing Legends and Leaders divisional structure. By default, really, the two schools, which have no claim to a particularly relevant historical rivalry, were dubbed protected rivals when the conference split into divisions in 2010. Next season, as the conference expands again, divisions are being reshuffled, and Purdue's protected cross-division rivalry will be with Indiana, which obviously makes much more sense. R Iowa was the team Purdue quarterback Danny Etling chose the Boilermakers over when he committed early last summer. Kirk Ferentz offered the As the graphic on Page 3 indicates, the Purdue-Iowa series has been one of prolonged periods of dominance between the teams. Iowa won six of the first seven games between the schools from 1910-1929. Purdue countered that by posting wins in 15 of the next 20 games from '29-'48. Iowa dominated from 1949-60, going 6-3-1 before the Boilermakers won 20 straight from 1961-80. Since '81, however, Iowa has dominated, going 17-7-1 during the stretch, including nine straight wins over Purdue from 1983-91, the heyday of Coach Hayden Fry. It has been a decade, however, since the Iowa-Purdue game meant a great deal in the conference standings. In the contest in Ross-Ade Stadium on Nov. 8, 2003, Purdue dismantled No. Terre Haute South QB a scholarship and hosted him on an unofficial visit. "They were really high up there in my recruiting process," Etling said. "They offered me after Purdue but before I committed. I was close. I took a visit there during spring break, and I really liked Coach Ferentz. They were a great program, and they really recruited me hard and I really liked what they told me. But I liked Purdue a lot better." 10 Iowa 27-14 in a game that wasn't even that close. The victory kept Coach Joe Tiller's 16thranked squad in the Big Ten title chase. Senior running back Jerod Void had a strong game with 120 rushing yards, but it was Kyle Orton's 45-yard pass to Anthony Chambers in the first 66 seconds of the second half that put the game out of reach. Purdue built a 27-0 lead later in the third quarter as Void scored from a yard out, his second touchdown of the day. The Boilermakers will be looking to avoid a third straight shutout, something that hasn't happened to a Gold and Black team since 1922 under first-year coach Jimmy Phelan. The Hawkeyes last shutout against the Boilermakers was in Ross-Ade Stadium with a 24-0 victory in 1989. On that day, Iowa's defense held Purdue to just 104 yards in total offense, sacking quarterback Eric Hunter nine times for 73 yards in losses. — Alan Karpick NUMBER CRUNCHING R 21.0: Kevonte MartinManley's league-leading punt return average, though it should be noted that number is built largely on the 83- and 63-yard touchdowns he scored back-to-back against Western Michigan in a 59-3 win Sept. 21. Iowa scored four non-offensive touchdowns in that game. R 1: The number of wins Iowa needs to secure bowl eli- gibility after missing the postseason a year ago. So this game is a big one for a 5-4 Hawkeye team that finishes out with games against Michigan and Nebraska. j celebrate o u r seniors ! 93rd Purdue Senior Appreciation Banquet Sponsored by the Lafayette Kiwanis Club Sunday, December 8, 2013, 12:45 p.m. Purdue Memorial Union Ballrooms Tickets available through Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics Ticket Office and online at www.PurdueSports.com Media Partner Media Partner GoldanDBlack express • volume 24, express 9  •  11
