Defensive End
1. Greg Latta 91
Nose Tackle
2. Ryan Isaac 61
Defensive End
1. Bruce Gaston Jr. 90
2. Evan Panfil 95
2. Ra'Zahn Howard 93
2. Jake Replogle 54
6-5, 260, Sr.
20 tackles, 0.5 TFL, 2 PBU*
Latta's not been productive since early in the
season, before his hamstring injury, when he
had 15 tackles and two pass breakups in the
first three weeks. In the four games since, he's
had only five tackles. Panfil's emergence could be part of the
reason, as well.
6-4, 240, Fr.
Jack
1. Ryan Russell 99
6-5, 270, Jr.
22 tackles, 4 TFL, 2 sacks*
As a novice to Purdue's Jack
position, which requires him
to stand up as a linebacker
as much as be a down linemen, Russell is going to make
some mistakes in the passing game. And he
appeared to do so against the Buckeyes, when
tight ends were running free through the
secondary. Phillips missed the game with a
shoulder injury.
2. Jalani Phillips 89
6-4, 292, Sr.
13 tackles, 0.5 TFL, 1 int.*
Before the start of the season, Purdue had
questions about its projected depth chart at
tackle in 2014, but Howard's emergence and
the switch to a three-man front have lessened
those concerns. Howard's made plays, including a couple pass
breakups, since he started playing three games ago.
6-3, 315, Fr.
6-2, 310, Sr.
33 tackles, 6.5 TFL, 3 sacks*
Darrell Hazell says Gaston has played his best
couple games of the season in Purdue's last two
outings; previously, he had had little impact.
But he's getting into the backfield more often
now, although not with enough consistency to dominate
games.
6-4, 240, Fr.
Middle Linebacker
1. Sean Robinson 10
Weakside Linebacker
1. Joe Gilliam 39
2. Ruben Ibarra 6
2. Will Lucas 45
6-3, 240, Jr.
33 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 PBU*
Robinson had one of his better
games of the season, with six
tackles against the Buckeyes.
It was a positive step for a linebacker who has been inconsistent in 2013. Ibarra is getting more playing
time now, because he brings a physical presence to the Boilermakers. And that's needed.
6-1, 234, Sr.
6-1, 225, Jr.
23 tackles, 1 TFL, 3 PBU, 1 FR*
Gilliam has shifted to Purdue's
weakside spot, allowing him
and Sean Robinson to play at
the same time. He had three
tackles vs. OSU, but hasn't yet
played as well as he did against Notre Dame
earlier in the season. Lucas struggled to cover
OSU's tight ends.
Strong Safety
1. Anthony Brown 9
2. Anthony Brown 9
2. Landon Feichter 44
5-10, 192, Jr.
41 tackles, 0.5 TFL, 1 PBU, 1 FF*
Richards has stepped up from
a leadership role during the
last month-and-a-half, trying to
help the moving pieces — and
there have been many — around him in the
secondary. And he's playing OK, with three
tackles vs. the Buckeyes.
5-11, 192, So.
5-11, 192, So.
45 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 PBU, 1 FF*
Far too often, Purdue's safeties weren't put in a favorable
position vs. OSU. Case in point:
On the Buckeyes' first offensive
touchdown, Brown had to chose which of two
wide-open receivers to cover. When he dove
inside, the ball went outside and OSU scored
easily. Feichter could play some vs. Iowa.
6-0, 188, Jr. –OR–
Rob Henry 22 6-1, 205, Sr. (5)
5-9, 186, Sr.
31 tackles, 4 TFL, 1 sack, 3 int.,
2 PBU*
Allen is out of the nickel spot
and back starting on the outside. It's an interesting move,
considering how much Purdue
praised Allen for his abilities as a nickel, where
he can be physical near the line. Clark started
consecutive games vs. Nebraska and MSU but
didn't play much against the Buckeyes.
5-11, 236, Sr.
2. Leroy Clark 3
Cornerback
1. Frankie Williams 24
Nickelback
1. Antoine Lewis 26
5-10, 175, Fr.
6-4, 256, Jr.
Free Safety
1. Taylor Richards 4
Cornerback
1. Ricardo Allen 21
5-9, 185, So.
40 tackles, 2 TFL, 2 int., 2 PBU*
Williams had 11 tackles against
the Buckeyes, probably not the
total Purdue wants out of a cornerback. It means he was cleaning up after others' messes. But Williams has
put together a good season, when healthy,
and should be an integral part of Purdue's
rebuild.
2. Normondo Harris 1
6-0, 180, Sr.
5-10, 185, Jr.
15 tackles, 1 PBU*
Lewis is now the starting nickel
back, having backed up Allen
there for the last couple games.
But look for Landon Feichter to
play the position some too, as Purdue practiced with three safeties on the field this week.
Logan had the Boilermakers' only TFL vs. OSU.
2. Austin Logan 5
6-0, 190, Fr.
