Aquila of Denver. "The fact that the Year of Faith has taken place at this point in history is no accident," the archbishop writes in his most recent pastoral letter. He explains that "the cultural context we live in is becoming increasingly dismissive of faith" in ways that "make it historically unprecedented." "Every one of us has been willed by the Father to live in these times," he adds, "and we have been given the challenge by Pope Emeritus Benedict and Pope Francis to ask for the gift of increased faith." The letter, titled "From Faith Comes Witness: A Pastoral Letter on the Year of Faith and its Impact," will be released Thursday, Nov. 21, on the memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. (Read an advanced copy of the letter on Pages 2-3). Benedict XVI opened the Year of Faith on Oct. 11, 2012— the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church—and Pope Francis will close it this Sunday, Nov. 24, the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King. "That encounter with Jesus was so convincing that Andrew went to his brother Peter and said, 'We have found the Messiah!'" the archbishop explains. "In the story of Andrew and Peter, we find the blueprint for what we are called to do after the Year of Faith." "The Year of Faith was not a marketing campaign for Catholics to get excited about," he continues, "it was a time to meet Jesus and his Church, to come to know and love Jesus and his Church more deeply. It was a time to grow in intimacy with Jesus, to encounter the Lord in your heart." "I pray that your experience of the Year of Faith involved an encounter with Jesus that impacted you like Andrew was," the archbishop adds. At 10:30 a.m., Nov. 24, Archbishop Samuel Aquila will celebrate a closing Mass for the Year of Faith at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Denver.
