album of the month
Antiphon
Issue 57 / 2013
Artist of the month
The Ramona Flowers
Released: 4th November
This is the band's fourth studio album,
and the first album since lead singer
Tim Smith left the band in 2012.
As the impressively grandiose title track and lead single suggests,
they really don't appear to be missing him. Antiphon sees them
rebooted and refreshed, and is a very promising prospect indeed.
LABEL OF THE MONTH
WICHITA
Fusing classic Rock sensibilities with an ever growing understanding of Electronica, The Ramona Flowers are a band packed with potential.
The Bristol 5 piece, signed to Distiller Records, are yet to release
their first album, however, it's very close to completion. Some
might say "98%" close. A show at Electrowerkz, Angel did nothing
to damage The Ramona Flowers stock in London. This is a band
that has a clear understanding of where they want to go, in terms
infusing electronic influences into a rock oriented and traditional
band set up. When their album is finished, you can bet that it will
be one of the unexpected hits of the year. Just watch the flowers
bloom.
The Guardian voted these guys as their New Band of the Day,
they followed this up by saying that they "...can't stand 'em but
we suspect people are going to love 'em". It would seem to be
an accurate prediction of this band. If you like, liked, or would like
to like, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs later sound, in particular "Blitz", The
Ramona Flowers are a good place to start. They all cite that album
as being one which has had a huge impact on where they see their
sound going, and it's obvious just how much inspiration that these
guys have taken from it. It's not that they've copied the electropop sound that Karen O et al did so well, rather, these guys just
really want to be as good. We can hope that in the future, they'll
look back and see their interview with Guestlist as their big break.

OUR PLAYLIST
Here's the Indie on our playlist this month:
13 Years Old and still going strong.
At Cheatahs show at The Sebright Arms in Hackney on October,
18th, you wouldn't be forgiven for having failed to realise that
Wichita had turned 13. With well established acts like The Cribs and
Los Campesinos! joining smaller ones like Swearin' and Peggy Sue,
it would seem that Wichita may just have a few more than another
13 years to celebrate.
The Velvet Undergound
Sweet Jane
Unknown Mortal Orchestra
So Good At Being In Trouble
Elliott Smith
Waltz #2
