Under the Dome halfback Art Best tote 10 times for 92 yards, and halfback Eric Penick add 12 rushes for 69 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Tom Clements' six pass completions include 21- and seven-yard touchdowns to Pete Demmerle. Next up is a Dec. 31 Sugar Bowl showdown with 11-0 and No. 1 Alabama for the national title. 35 Years Ago: Nov. 25, 1978 Joe Montana puts on the most electrifying Notre Dame passing exhibition in one quarter during a loss at eventual co-national champ USC. Trailing 24-6 in the fourth quarter against a stout Trojans defense that includes future All-Pros Ronnie Lott and Dennis Smith in the secondary, Montana completes 11 of 15 passes for 201 yards — with 57- and two-yard scoring passes to Kris Haines and Pete Holohan, respectively — and adds 18 yards rushing to give the Irish a 25-24 lead with 46 seconds remaining. Aided by a controversial no-fumble call, the Trojans win on a 37-yard Frank Jordan field goal with two seconds left to snap Notre Dame's eight-game winning streak. 25 Years Ago: Nov. 26, 1988 In its first No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown in 20 years, the top-ranked 10-0 Fighting Irish become the underdogs at 10-0 No. 2 USC when Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz sends home leading rusher Tony Brooks and leading receiver Ricky Watters for repeated tardiness on the eve of the game. USC wins the statistical battles with 21 first downs to Notre Dame's eight and 356 yards total offense compared to 253 by the Irish. However, the Irish induce four turnovers while committing only one, draw first blood with a 65-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tony Rice, and add a 64-yard interception return for a score by cornerback Stan Smagala with 41 seconds left in the first half for a 20-7 halftime lead. Cornerback Stan Smagala's 64-yard interception Two short scoring runs by Mark Green contribreturn for a touchdown helped the No. 1 Irish rout ute to the 27-10 victory, and a Jan. 2 matchup with West Virginia for the national title.
