This week, the football offices in Mollenkopf are littered with reminders of Purdue's looming opponent. In the elevator that takes one to the coaches offices on the third floor, there's a picture of players hoisting the Old Oaken Bucket with the words "keep it home" in all caps. As soon as the elevator doors open, "Beat the Hoosiers" greets visitors — it's plastered on the frosted glass doors that lead back to the office. Seemingly on every wall, there are placards that say "Indiana" with the word "beat" in gold and black tacked on over top. And those are just recent additions. Weeks after Hazell moved into the space, there's been a digital clock on the wall outside his office with a countdown to the IU game. But those are just the cosmetic reminders. The whole week will be full of other moments staged to inspire a passion for this game, for this victory, for this program to try to at least snatch some kind of momentum from an otherwise disappointing season. On Sunday, players watched a highlight video of sports' greatest rivalries. It was capped by PurdueIndiana. On Tuesday during the team's first practice of the week, Hazell brought out the Bucket and sat it on its case near midfield and asked his players, "How bad do you want it?" Then he made them run sideline Tom Campbell to sideline sprints for the Indiana is 21-point favorite in the latest battle for the Bucket. It's an odd posinext two minutes before tion for Purdue, considering it has won nine of the last 11 games in the rivalry. resuming practice. One of those Hoosiers' wins, though, was this one in Bloomington, in 2007. THE Numbers 5 16-4 1-10 Games in the last 50 Bucket contests that a team has entered the game with one victory on the season. That team has never left the contest victorious. Purdue's record dating to 1997 when it enjoyed a plus-3 turnover margin as it did against Illinois on Saturday. The Boilermakers' record dating to 1970 when an opposing quarterback completes 80 percent of his passes as Illinois' Nathan Scheelhaase did. Purdue's lone win under these conditions came in the miracle comeback against MSU in 1997. The last year the Boilermakers were an underdog in the Bucket Game. In that contest, Purdue dropped a 13-7 contest to the Antwaan RandleEl-led Hoosiers in a driving rainstorm in Bloomington. 2001 He has even more things planned as the game draws nearer, and every gesture and moment are with one thing in mind: "We want our players to understand that this is more than just a game," Hazell said. The locals to the state already have a taste of what to expect, but their transplant teammates get understand it pretty quickly, too. GoldanDBlack express • volume 24, express 12  •  1
