1 2 3 Message from kevin The donors and volunteers who rally behind Mount Sinai Hospital have enabled our institution to continually pursue excellence and achieve it. This issue pays tribute to some of these amazing donors. The recent transformational $35 million donation from Larry and Judy Tanenbaum to support research at Mount Sinai is an extraordinary example of a gift that will help shape the future of our Hospital and impact the way health care is delivered worldwide. The renamed Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute will propel scientific advances forward in many of our Hospital's flagship clinical programs. In this issue, you will also read about our innovative Geriatric Emergency Management program, new advances in prostate cancer diagnostics and our renowned Reitman Centre CARERS Program, all examples of how Mount Sinai is reshaping the future of health care. We also celebrate the tremendous contributions of our dedicated Auxiliary, who celebrated their 60th anniversary this year. It is an exciting time for Mount Sinai as we continue to reimagine our Hospital and all that health care can be. Historic $35 million gift to research renames the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute 1 2 3 On June 24, Mount Sinai Hospital announced a transformational $35 million gift from Larry and Judy Tanenbaum in support of research. It was with great pride that Hospital Board Chair Jay Hennick, together with Foundation Management Board Chair Brent Belzberg and The Honourable Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario, announced the gift, one that will help propel medical research discoveries and change the way health care is delivered in Canada and beyond. The Tanenbaum family has always been a strong voice in support of medical research and have historically supported the Hospital's internationally recognized Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute, one of the top ten medical research institutes in the world. To recognize this incredible gift, the institute has been renamed the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute. "Research is about finding answers to questions, where failure is more common than success, and where the cost of success requires time, patience and investment," said Larry. "Judy and I continue to be inspired and rewarded by the researchers at Mount Sinai and the quiet success they are achieving. Their discoveries are transforming the way that we understand disease and this not only positions Canada as a leader in biomedical research, but is leading the way towards how patients will be cared for in the future." We couldn't do it without you. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Kevin R. They have earmarked $15 million of their donation as a matching gift to raise an additional $15 million, creating a total endowment of $50 million as the bedrock support for the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute for years to come. Their gift is meant to inspire additional gifts from the community, creating sustainable funding for the renowned institute. What this gift will mean for research at Mount Sinai Hospital Dr. Jim Woodgett, Director of Research at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum, explains how this gift will impact the research institute. "We are very proud that both the Lunenfeld/Kunin and Tanenbaum families are associated with our research institute. This incredible gift from the Tanenbaum family provides sustainability — a crucial requirement in the volatile and uncertain world of scientific research — and, I hope, encourages other visionary philanthropists.
