NICHOLAS Find out how in the story on Page 2. Seminary construction in full swing PAGE 6 PHOTO BY JULIE FILBY/DCR St. Nicholas was born to a wealthy and devout Christian family in the small village of Patera in modern day Turkey. His parents modeled to Nicholas the joy of giving and caring for the poor, an example he followed throughout his life. Eventually, Nicholas was made bishop of Myra and was reported to be in attendance at the First Council of Nicaea in 325. Stories abound of his great love for children and his commitment to giving gifts which eventually inspired his connection to "Santa Claus." He died on Dec. 6, 343. —Denver Catholic Biblical and Catechetical schools
