Jeremy Gallon Breaks U-M Single-Season Receiving Record M ichigan's trip to the desert resulted in a slow start by the defense and a sluggish effort by the offense, resulting in a 31-14 loss to Kansas State in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. There was at least one positive that came out of the game, which dropped the Wolverines to a 7-6 record on the year: Jeremy Gallon vaulted himself into the U-M record books. The fifth-year senior wide receiver, who was voted the 2013 team MVP by his teammates at the annual Michigan Football Bust, caught nine passes for 89 yards against the Wildcats. Gallon did that and more, capping his stellar final Michigan season with 89 catches for a school-record 1,373 yards and nine touchdowns. Unfortunately, the Wolverines couldn't finish the job. And even though his record is something at which to marvel, Gallon would have traded it for a win in his final game with the program. "Disappointing game," he said. "The record right now doesn't mean anything without a win, THE WOLVERINE • Page 4 especially with these guys. Right now I don't care about the record." Gallon also set the Michigan record for most consecutive games with at least one reception, hauling in at least one catch for the 39th straight game. Gallon tied the record set by Edwards in Michigan's 42-41 loss to Ohio State in the regular-season finale. Although Gallon has been a reliable pass-catching option for most of the last four years, this type of production was almost unimaginable for the 5-8, 187-pound receiver halfway through his redshirt junior season. Gallon caught four passes for 49 yards and a score in 2010; totaled 31 passes for 453 yards and three touchdowns in 2011; and added 18 catches for 318 yards and one touchdown in the first eight games of last season. Those are solid numbers — but by no means historic. And then quarterback Devin Gardner took over as the starter for an injured Denard Robinson, and everything changed. Since Gardner's first career start at Minnesota last season, Gallon has been nearly unstoppable. In the last 18 games (the last five of 2012 and the entire 2013 season), Gallon has racked up an incredible 120 catches for 1,884 yards (15.7 yards per catch) and 12 touchdowns. In that timeframe, Gallon has caught four or more passes in all but one game (two catches for 39 yards vs. Minnesota this year) and has put together some of the biggest games by a receiver in program history. He accumulated 184 yards and three touchdowns in Michigan's 41-30 win over Notre Dame, and he set a Big Ten single-game record when Michigan's offensive exploded in the 63-47 win over Indiana. In that game, Gallon hauled in 14 catches for 369 yards and two touchdowns. And he added another nine catches for 175 yards and a score in the Wolverines' near-miss upset bid against Ohio State. Gallon's U-M career is now over. He finished with 173 career catches for 2,704 yards and 17 touchdowns. He ranks third in program history in career receiving yards, behind Edwards' 3,541 yards from 2001-04 and Anthony Carter's 3,076 yards from 1979-82. Gallon also ranks third in career receptions in school history, behind Edwards' 252 and Marquise Walker's 176 from 1998-2001. — Andy Reid
