Manufacturer Q&A HOTROD Exhausted For Performance A ny high-performance engine requires a combination of systems that are designed to work together effectively. Exhaust systems are one of those critical systems where custom hot rod and performance vehicle builders can extract a few more horses, but it's not always as simple as just bolting on a set of headers or some new pipes. We asked some exhaust manufacturers to answer a few questions about their products and how they compare to original factory equipment. Performance & Hotrod Business: What's the scope of your company's exhaust product offerings to the performance/hotrod/restoration market? Blane Burnett, Holley Performance Products, Bowling Green, Ky.: Hooker Headers has always been about manufacturing horsepower and torque-producing headers and exhaust components for domestic applications. We understand that customers are looking for exhaust solutions at varying price points and applications and build our products to suit those needs. A number of our cost-effective exhaust products are released under our Flowtech brand from universal mufflers and X-pipe kits, to application-specific headers. Vince Roman, Burns Stainless, Costa Mesa, Calif.: Burns Stainless LLC supplies exhaust components to the motorsports industry. Our product line includes mandrel bends and tubing in 304SS, 321SS and aluminum, merge collectors, flanges and fabrication accessories such as O2 sensor bungs and fastening tabs. Burns Stainless can also offer exotic materials such as Inconel and Titanium tubing and bends on a custom basis. We also assist customers in designing their exhaust header and undercar exhaust systems for maximum performance utilizing the proprietary X-design software. Andy Heitmann, Hells Gate Hot Rods, Viola, Idaho: Hells Gate Hot Rods provides a very extensive line of exhaust flanges and products for a wide variety of engines from the 1920s and newer. Currently, our product line consists of over 75 different exhaust flanges, which cover hundreds of engine applications. Other exhaust 56 n Performance & Hotrod Business PHBFEB_52-77.indd 56 n parts we offer are mandrel bends, collector flanges, turbo flanges, megaphones, merge collectors and more. We focus on creating kits and manufacturing parts specific to our customers' needs. Our exhaust products were developed to help the DIY builder, exhaust shop or restoration/hot rod shop be able to fabricate custom headers as needed. With oddball combinations of engines and vehicles becoming more popular, builders need more options for headers that will work on their unique projects, and this is the reason we offer U-Weld kits for headers. With hot rodders in mind, we also aim to create a Lakester-style header kit for every flange we manufacture. Mark Lewis, Hedman Hedders, Whittier, Calif.: Hedman Hedders has been designing and manufacturing exhaust headers in the United States since 1954. PHB: What types of engines, makes and model years are your products designed for, primarily? Burnett: Both the Hooker and Flowtech lines offer broad coverage for domestic performance applications, both old and February 2014 1/7/14 2:17 PM
