However, there are basic distinctions that differentiate the two brands. While the Flowtech line is primarily comprised of American muscle/street car and truck applications, the Hooker line offers a more expanded selection of products for the same applications as well as products intended solely for competition use (i.e. dragster headers) and highly engineered components geared toward the popular LS swap market. Both lines include applications for Chrysler, Ford and General Motors as well as a limited number of import applications. Roman: Burns Stainless does not offer any model-specific parts at this time. We do offer short run production for specialty applications such as the Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer. Heitmann: We primarily focus on engines produced before 1975; however, we do make flanges that fit newer applications. We offer flanges for 4-cylinder, inline 6, V-6, inline 8, and V-8 engines. Our products are compatible with several hundred applications so we cannot list them all here, but we are more than willing to provide a complete product list, if interested. One thing that sets us apart and frequently surprises our customers is the wide variety of uncommon flanges that we manufacture, including those made for Buick Straight 8, Chrysler Poly, Buick Nailhead, Studebaker, Cadillac and all early Hemis. (Photo courtesy Hedman Hedders) Lewis: Although Hedman manufactures 50-state-legal exhaust headers for late-model domestic cars and trucks, the lion's share of Hedman's vast application guide deals with classic vehicles built by the Big 3 (Ford, GM, Chrysler) between 1950 and 1973. PHB: How do you differentiate your aftermarket exhaust systems from the OEMs? Burnett: The vast majority of OE manufacturers, excepting the separate tuning arms of some companies (A.M.G., Chevrolet Performance, TRD, NISMO, etc.) are mass-producing vehicle components that will stand the test of time with respect to durability, efficiency, and longevity. Our engineering and product development facility at Hooker Headers is tasked with accomplishing many of those same goals. Where we differ is that most of our products are designed for off-road or race use, which allows us to employ various technologies and designs that free-up horsepower in the area of exhaust and help our customers perform at the top of their game in whatever form of motorsport in which they are involved. Heitmann: Our goal is to supply our customers with parts to fabricate their own headers and exhaust systems to replace the factory manifolds. This is generally sought after for performance, aesthetics or fitment issues. Lewis: Hedman Hedders replace the factory-installed exhaust manifolds to improve the engine's ability to expel exhaust gases, which allows the engine to produce more power. Factory exhaust manifolds are typically made from cast iron, and are short. Exhaust manifolds are just one of many parts on a vehicle, and other than making sure they fit in a given space and cost considerations, little thought ever seems to go into the design of the factory manifolds. At Hedman, our only focus is on designing and building one thing: headers. It's all we've done for 60 years now, and we know how to build a set of headers that allows an engine to perform at its peak. PHB: How do different materials used in the manufacture of your exhaust systems affect performance? (Such as steel, stainless steel, etc.) Burnett: As with all forms of manufacturing, typical materials offer various benefits and drawbacks in the performance aftermarket.
