ne Spaces addition to preserve continuity with the existing home while giving a distinct character to the new structure. Years before work began on the addition, the landscape architecture company Gregory Lombardi Design had constructed a low stonewall garden overlooking the water. Foley drew inspiration from its circular form for the tower. Curving the mahogany slats to form the circular shape of the tower was perhaps the biggest construction challenge, Foley says. A challenge of a different sort was creating a carport that didn't obscure the waterfront views that revealed themselves halfway down the driveway—hence, the trellis-like structure and the open base of the tower. "We wanted to make a more focused view of the water beyond," Foley says. Deborah Howe, a landscape architect with Wolf Lighthall, helped Foley blend the addition into the existing landscape. Additionally, Howe worked with Make Architectural Metalworking Ltd. to design and fabricate a scupper on the side of the addition; the water that collects in the valley of the butterfly roof pours into the scupper, drips down a rain chain, and lands onto a carved rock below. "It was something that seemed fun, to sort of make a sculpture object on the house," Foley says of the scupper. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the project was that, in the year that lapsed from those first conversations with the homeowners until the finishing touches were completed, very little of that initial design changed. "Sometimes, as architects, you get slightly weird ideas," Foley says. "And sometimes, the thing that made the idea special gets lessened through people being cautious, or concerned, or not wanting to do something too outrageous." But this time around, clients and contractors alike embraced the unconventional. The last thing the landscape needed was something ordinary—and when the landscape spoke, everyone was listening. foleyfiore.com For more photos go to nshoremag.com/ wolf-lighthall-landscaping 60 nshoremag.com March 2014 NB KJ NS Mar14 Fiore.indd 60 1/15/14 2:54 PM
