From the Editor True Form Putting together Northshore's Home issue reminds me of how rich and vibrant our region's housing stock is. From historical Shingle-style homes dotting the rugged coastline to new farmhouses based on vernacular forms, these houses create a sense of place. Speaking with local architects, we learn how much thought and effort go into building a new house or renovating an antique, and keeping it contextual with its neighborhood and the landscape. My own restoration of an 1870 Queen Anne brings to mind how house projects can be an uphill battle. Whether it's renovating a kitchen or freshening up walls with a new coat of paint, I'm an advocate of turning to North Shore experts for help along the way. Our cover story is a cheery kitchen project designed by architect Benjamin Nutter. When Melissa and Jay Pierce inherited a Topsfield property that had been in their family since 1850, they knew they could not salvage the original house so Nutter re-created the old in a new farmhouse for the couple. The kitchen is warm and welcoming, and the hub of this young family's home (page 52). We also visit with architect Matthew Cummings in Ipswich, who is a master at restoring first-period houses. Ipswich has the largest collection of 17th-century houses in the country, and Cummings has made a career of coaxing these antiques back to life (page 68). Writer Calvin Hennick visits Historic New England, a non-profit organization that cares for nine historical house museums on the North Shore, and writes about the organization's 100-year history. On a contemporary note, Dave Seymour and Peter Souhleris, co-hosts of A&E's Flipping Boston, take ho-hum houses and turn them into showplaces—such is the 14 nshoremag.com March 2014 Mar14 Contributors.indd 14 contributors Mary Grauerholz is a freelance feature writer who focuses on sustainability, architecture, health, and food. We also look at old and new houses that are both informed by and make statements about the past. Architectural firm Albert, Righter & Tittmann designs a stately Shingle-style house on the coast in Manchester-by-the-Sea. The design is based on a historic icon called "Kragsyde," designed by Peabody & Stearns in 1883. The house was named the best example of Shingle-style architecture of its time, and there is no doubt that the new "Rocksyde" follows in its footsteps (page 156). The landscape at Willowgate in Manchester has also been restored with history in mind. Designed in the 1880s for the sister of novelist Henry James, the summerhouse and gardens overlook the sea. Gregory Lombardi Design reinvented the grounds for new owners who wanted to keep the original plantings while enhancing the garden for today's living. We celebrate the region's architects, designers, and builders who make welcoming homes here on the North Shore. Enjoy! Nancy E.
