ne Kitchen light, a separate pantry for storing dishes and dry goods, and a screened porch just off the space for dining. Nutter suggested the couple attend a "lunch and learn" at Newburyport's Jewett Farms + Co., which custom designs and builds furnituregrade cabinetry. "We walked in and fell in love with display cabinets in their showroom," notes Melissa. Jewett Farms collaborated with Nutter to design and build cabinetry with an understated Shaker-style profile. Topped with honed granite, the look resembles soapstone, a material used in 19th-century kitchens. To allow for views of the landscape and as much natural light as possible in the kitchen, Nutter opted to forgo over-counter cabinets and instead incorporated wraparound windows in the room's corners. Several under-counter drawers hold pots, pans, and other cooking utensils. The cabinet drawer pulls and knobs, reminiscent of early 19th-century hardware, are finished in antiqued bronze. To accommodate a beverage center and glassware storage, Nutter designed a builtin hutch with a Brazilian cherry countertop, which matches the flooring. A second sink in the hutch is handy when the couple entertains large crowds. Melissa is well organized and wanted her kitchen to be as such. She requested a pantry with open shelves for her dry goods, which she stores neatly in glass mason jars. Melissa and Jay also store china, table linens, seasonal platters, and vases in this space. This pantry is accessed through a covered porch, which makes off-loading groceries from the car easy. The center island is large enough for both prep work and dining. When we entertain, we often serve buffet-style from the island, which accommodates eight to ten adults comfortably. "It's a real hangout spot," Melissa says. Another great gathering Traditional Elements Nutter sourced Brazilian cherry flooring and honed granite counters for the new kitchen. "The doors allow a great amount of filtered light into the space," notes Nutter. Because the couple loves to cook, high-end appliances were a must. They purchased a six-burner Bluestar stove at Eurostoves in Beverly. Its built-in grill allows the couple to extend the grilling season to year-round. "The cast-iron top is so easy to clean, too," Melissa notes. They also incorporated a Sub-Zero fridge into the mix. Melissa sourced the Franke stainless steel sinks and Grohe gooseneck faucets from Designer Bath and Salem Plumbing Supply in Beverly. "We love our kitchen," says Melissa. It is everything the couple wanted and more. It truly is an heirloom to pass down to their children in years to come. benjaminnutter.com 54 nshoremag.com March 2014 NB KJ NS Mar14 Nutter.indd 54 1/16/14 9:56 AM
