Not being ready from the start on defense. "I could keep going," he said after Purdue lost again Sunday at Penn State. Though fifth-year senior Carter thought the Boilermakers did some things better last week in two losses, getting the ball in the post first be- fore taking quick shots, there still are problems that need to be fixed to get this team untracked. They're "little things," Carter said. But they're quickly adding up into bigger themes: Purdue's four- game losing streak is its longest since losing the final five games of the 2005-06 season, Matt Painter's first as head coach. Two of the losses during the current streak were to then-No. 10 teams — Wisconsin and Michi- gan — but the others were on the road at Northwestern and then an 11-point loss to the Nittany Lions, who were only one game over .500. "It's frustrating," Painter said of the stretch. "We're in a good league, and it's hard to get wins. I think ev- erybody feels that way, no matter what your record is. We just have to do a better job. (Against Michigan), we had fewer turnovers and more rebounds and we got beat. (Against Penn State), we had fewer rebounds and more turnovers. "You're frustrated by a lot of things. You've just got to get better and keep going." Painter has been pointing to needing better leadership and more experience but has admitted this group doesn't have either. He needs to his young players to play with more maturity, which means fol- lowing assignments defensively and taking care of the ball and being dis- ciplined on offense. But he may have to get them Lon Horwedel Purdue's players will need to come together if they want to some extent salvage the season with a postseason berth. The Boilermakers are in the midst of a four-game losing streak, their longest since 2006. 9 Different lineups the Purdue men have used this season after senior Sterling Carter earned his first start at Penn State. 11 Three-point attempts against Penn State, a season low. Purdue is shooting just 19 percent from be- yond the arc in the last three games. 3 Double-doubles this season for A.J. Hammons as he had 18 points and 12 boards at Penn State. 3 Season-ending knee injuries the last four years for the women's program, starting with KK Houser in 2010-11; Drey Mingo in 2011-12 and Houser again (provided the news is bad, as expected) this season. 53 Percentage of Purdue's points from the bench against Michigan State. The 39 points from the pine was the second-highest contribution for the women this season. volume 24, eX 19 • feb. 3, 2014 THE NumbErs Inside | Boilers' road woes; notes 7-11 | Houser injured 13–16 Avril wins Super Bowl 19–20 | Recruiting notes 21-22 Fighting Frustration fired up again to do it. After the Penn State loss, A.J. Hammons said he thinks some of the team's younger players are hitting a mental "wall of frustra- tion." That'll need to get corrected quickly for Purdue to try to make a push toward better play in the final month of the regular season. Sitting at 13-9 and 3-6 in the league, the Boil- ermakers still have games against Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa
