The Boilermakers dropped a 3-0 decision in the season opener then followed that up with a much more lopsided defeat, falling 20-2 in the nightcap. Conner Hudnall and Sean McHugh were the only Boil- ers to register multiple hits on the day, with Hudnall tallying a pair of doubles and driving in a run in the two games. On the mound, Jordan Minch went 4 2/3 innings in the opener, allowing only two runs on six hits in the loss. In Game 2, Kyle Wood struggled from the outset, only lasting one-third of an inning, al- lowing four runs on three hits and walk- ing two. The Volunteers would add seven more runs in the third, five in the fourth, and three in the sixth to run away with the game and clinch a series win. The series concluded Monday with Game 3. Purdue travels to Houston this weekend for a three-game series at Rice (2-1). SwimmerS eye poStSeaSon As the winter season heads into March, Purdue's swimming and diving pro- grams turn their attention to the postseason and set their sights on NCAA qualifying standards. The men's swimmers have one final event before post- season competition at the Michigan First Chance meet this weekend in Ann Arbor. The follow- ing weekend, they'll return to Michigan for the Big Ten Championships. The women's team begins the post- season this weekend in Minneapolis for the Big Ten Championships that begin Wednesday and runs through Saturday. wreStlerS loSe finale Purdue closed its regular season on Sunday with a 22-12 loss at No. 5 North- ern Iowa. Danny Sabatello and Patrick Kissel led the Boilermakers with a pair of top-20 upsets in the loss. Sabatello defeated No. 14 Joey Lazor at 141 pounds while Kis- sel knocked off No. 17 Cody Caldwell by decision. Purdue also got wins from Alex Griffin at 157 pounds and No. 12 Braden Atwood at 197 pounds. The Boilermakers (6-8 overall, 1-7 Big Ten) now turn their atten- tion to the postseason and the Big Ten Cham- pionships in two weeks. The two-day event, which will be hosted by Wisconsin, takes place March 8-9. tenniS SplitS in-State matcheS The men's ten- nis team split a pair of matches against IUPUI and Valparaiso over the weekend at the Schwartz Tennis Center, earning a 6-1 victory over the Jaguars before dropping a 5-2 decision to the Crusaders.
