76 SXSWedu 2014 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM HigherEdNext Series hosted by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Students in Higher Education: The New Normal Hilton Salon H | Panel Discussion Increasing energy and innovation is being applied to better understand and serve a diverse group of post-traditional students in higher ed. We'll explore the place of these students in the Higher Ed ecosystem and the impact of efforts to help them complete credentials that count, including learn and earn programs, industry partnerships, and competency-based education. Come learn what's working and what remains to be done to reach and teach what is fast becoming a "new normal" student population. George Tang, Educate Texas, Mark Milliron, Civitas Learning Inc, Parminder Jassal, ACT Foundation, Ray Martinez, WGU Texas #HigherEdNext 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM BEST PRACTICES & IMPLEMENTATION The Library Paradox: Collections and Connections Hilton Salon D | Panel Discussion With instant access to online information, our generation does not need as many printed resources as we once did. Yet research shows that students identify libraries as critical to their academic success. What are the ingredients a successful academic library? What do students want to do there, and what spaces support these activities? Is there alignment between the needs of students and administrators? We will explore the future of the academic library and ask: how will the library evolve? John Culshaw, University of Iowa, Mark Thaler, Gensler, Mimi Calter, Stanford University Libraries, Nadaleen Tempelman-Kluit, New York University #librarynxt 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM ACHIEVEMENT GAPS & EDUCATIONAL EQUALITY There Are No Silver Bullets in Education ACC Room 18ABCD | Featured Session Over her 25 years in education, Wendy Kopp has heard it all: vouchers are the key to education success! No, no, it's charter schools. Or smaller class size. Or a computer for every kid. Teach For All's CEO argues there are no silver bullets to solving educational inequality. If we want a real revolution in education, we need to cultivate a generation of leaders who have first-hand classroom experience and understand how to help our most marginalized children reach their full potential. Wendy Kopp, Teach For All #NoSilverBullets 12:20 PM - 12:35 PM SHARED & OPEN RESOURCES 50 Kids to 50 States: Igniting the Educade Nation Hilton Salon C | Future15: Gaming Instead of limiting impact by simply replicating schools, GameDesk built its own "Net- flix for Education" by launching Educade, a website offering free, ready to use lesson plans that integrate high-tech, low-tech, and no-tech teaching tools. GameDesk is igniting a nation to be inspired, to bridge the gap between education and technology, and to make serious learning fun. Lucien Vattel, GameDesk 12:30 PM - 1:00 PM DIY, MAKER & HACKER LightUp Electronics Playground: Learn by Making! ACC Ballroom EF | Playground Hands On Hear a bit about our grand vision to merge the interactivity of a mobile app with good ol' hands-on learning, and then start making something right away. Snap together LightUp's magnetic blocks to build a working circuit in seconds, even if you've never built one before. Take a photo of your circuit with the LightUp App to get some im- mediate guidance or see an enlightening animation. Finally, program your circuit to do something cool with our Arduino-compatible microcontroller block. Josh Chan, LightUp Inc #lightup 12:40 PM - 12:55 PM GAMING & VIRTUAL LEARNING Gaming Theory: The New Look of Math Class Hilton Salon C | Future15: Gaming This session will draw on recent cognitive research to dissect and demonstrate the potential power of tapping gaming theory for math education. What does it mean to leverage adaptive leveling, immediate feedback, transparent progress and intriguing math tasks to build conceptual and procedural fluency? Participants will learn what gamification is, gain techniques for applying gaming elements to instructional prac- tices in math, acquire a framework for evaluating digital learning games and more! Alex Sarlin, TripleJump 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM BIG DATA & LEARNING ANALYTICS 3D Growth for Data Driven Decision Making Hilton Salon A | Core Conversation E3 Alliance has worked with partners in Texas to adapt BIG data and apply the best growth model in the country to support positive changes in policy and practice. Un- derstand this model for data-driven change and hear directly from a superintendent who uses it. Charles Dupre, Ford Bend ISD, Susan Dawson, E3 Alliance #e3alliance 1:30 PM - 2:00 PM DIY, MAKER & HACKER 3DP and Fine Arts ACC Ballroom EF | Playground Talk In pursuit of a 3D printer, an art teacher from an outlying high school discovers the creativity of the printing world and is forced to reconcile the new technology with the old masters. Eric Mott, Giddings High School #3Dfineart 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM LEADERSHIP & INSPIRATION Designing the Future University from the Inside Hilton Room 400/402 | Panel Discussion Higher education is at a critical juncture point. We believe that the decisions we make over the next 2–3 years will determine what Georgetown is going to look like 20– 30 years from now. Our panel convenes "ed" and "tech" to discuss how universities can be proactive in their evolution amidst the potential disruptions in Higher Ed. We'll share how we're experimenting with ways to deliver a valued education and using a university- wide design challenge to explore the future(s) of the university. Lisa Davis, Georgetown University, Robert Groves, Georgetown University, Ziliang (Michael) Wang, Georgetown University #GUatSxSW 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM SOCIAL & MOBILE LEARNING EcoMOBILE: Virtual Immersion for Real Students ACC Room 12AB | Panel Discussion Emerging technologies can act as a bridge between young people and their local envi- ronments. The EcoMOBILE project blends virtual worlds and augmented realities for learning ecosystem science. In our research, students have learning experiences in im- mersive, simulated ecosystems. Then they use mobile devices in real ecosystems aug- mented with virtual information. Students collect and share data, experience visual- izations and simulations, and interpret causal patterns to solve ecosystem problems. Amy Kamarainen, New York Hall of Science, Chris Dede, Harvard Graduate School of Education, L Todd Rose, Harvard Graduate School of Education #ecomobile WEDNESDAY SESSIONS
