In this session we meet students from the University of Michigan internet History, Technology and Security Course taught on Coursera. Charles Severance, University of Michigan #IHTS 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM EDUCATION POLICY & FUNDING Education Reform Is the Cause of 2014 ACC Room 16AB | Panel Discussion In many parts of the country, students and their families are denied a voice and choice in their classrooms, schools and in their communities. Changing that and giving stu- dents and their families the opportunity and right to determine their own education could change everything, from quality and funding equity to standardized tests and closing the achievement and college acceptance gap. Alexis Morin, Students for Education Reform, Caroline Howard, Forbes, Sydney Morris, Educators 4 Excellence #SXSWEdReform 1:50 PM - 2:05 PM GAMING & VIRTUAL LEARNING Teacher Level Up!—Gamification of PD Hilton Salon C | Future15: Professional Development We have transformed our PD program to incorporate the techniques of gamification to motivate our faculty to take their teaching skills to the next level. This presentation will explore the creation and implementation process of such a program, highlighting the successes and the mistakes and pitfalls to avoid. Matt Baier, Cathedral Catholic High School 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM BEST PRACTICES & IMPLEMENTATION Caught on Cam: Pairing Video Analysis and Practice Hilton Salon E | Workshop Getting better requires practice, pure and simple. Whether it's an athlete reviewing tape or a business leader rehearsing for a presentation, video review and practice are critical to improvement. In this workshop, we provide an interactive demonstration of how we use video and practice to build adult leadership and instructional skills in fu- ture principals. During the session, you'll learn how to couple the power of video with dedicated practice to build "muscle memory" in aspiring principals. Delvin Burton, New Leaders, Jennifer Henry, New Leaders 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM DIY, MAKER & HACKER Reverse Engineering to Teach Design in High School Hilton Room 410 | Workshop Get hands-on experience at reverse engineering, to teach future inventors, engineers, and entrepreneurs. Learn how reverse engineering should be systematic, starting with interviews and product analysis. Then disassemble a low-cost physical product while creating good engineering documentation. Finally use this information to get great redesign ideas. These activities are based on NSF-funded research. Teachers should leave this workshop ready to implement similar lessons in their own classrooms. Miguel Alanis, UTeach Engineering, Pius Wong, The University of Texas at Austin #EYW 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM DIY, MAKER & HACKER The Classroom Teacher's Indie Author Revolution Hilton Room 408 | Workshop The tools to create multi-touch eBooks are sparking a revolutionary movement of in- dependent classroom authors. Rocketship's innovative model requires our teachers to master new skills in order to create individu- alized solutions for each child. Hear how we're creating a community for our staff that is collaborative and sustainable and where our people feel valued. In our approach, teachers receive targeted PD, real-time coaching and above-market salaries. Preston Smith, Rocketship Education 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM EDUCATION POLICY & FUNDING Can Funding Outcomes Boost Higher Ed Performance? Hilton Salon B | Policy Forum In many states, there is growing interest in increasing productivity at universities by implementing new funding models that reward outcomes rather than enrollments. But some have had more success than others. For example, Tennessee's university funding is now entirely outcomes-based. But in Texas, the idea hasn't gotten off the ground. What does it take to find the right formula? Fred Heldenfels, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Martha Snyder, HCM Strategists LLC, Philip Castille, University of Houston Victoria, Sean Tierney, Lumina Foundation #outcomes WEDNESDAY SESSIONS
