Those are part of the "little things" Schuette so values. And qualities that start from the top. "You want someone who's the head coach to be a great leader, a great role model and have true character and integrity, and hope- fully people would say I am that, and I pride myself on that," Schuette said. "Just like I tell our players, it's all about the little things, doing the little things right all the time. I practice what I preach. "I feel like I embody several dif- ferent aspects that are important in life, as well as college athletics. Be- ing a mom, being a teacher, being 2.75) will get innings, too. Senior Lauren Grant is another option af- ter moving back to the mound from playing infield for three years. Schuette, who is coaching Pur- due's pitchers, likes the mix of styles in the rotation and will learn how to utilize their skills within games, she said. But she's hoping for a boost in strikeouts, as well as improving the ERA (3.00, sixth). "You can have four pitchers and that's not enough (or) you can have two and that's plenty," Schuette said. "If two are on, two is great. If you have four and four of them are kind of roller coastering, you're spinning your wheels. But in prac- tice and throwing live and being able to do a lot of things in practice and then take it to the game, four is fun. Right now we have four kids who are completely different, and that's cool." After suffering through 11 of their 15 Big Ten losses by two runs or more, the Boilermakers hope their new offensive approach and more seasoned pitching staff can lead to more competition. And progress. "I want people to see as we're not easy to beat. It's always going to be fight until the end when it comes to Purdue softball," Varsho said. "I want us to come out every game and know we can win against any team, as long as we know it our- selves. I want teams to be scared of us. We want them to have a worry deep down and know they're going to have to work hard." — Stacy Clardie 2014 softball schedule Date Opponent Time/Result Feb. 8 North Carolina* L, 2-3 Feb. 8 Northern Iowa* L, 3-5 Feb. 9 No. 10 Texas* W, 5-4 Feb. 9 No. 13 La.-Lafayette T, 7-7 (8) Feb. 14 Coastal Carolina+ L, 0-3 Feb. 14 Coastal Carolina+ W, 11-5 Feb. 15 Virginia+ W, 13-3 Feb. 15 Towson+ L, 0-8 Feb. 16 Towson+ W, 11-7 Feb. 22 Samford@ 2:15 p.m. Feb. 22 Jacksonville State@ 7 p.m. Feb. 23 Miss.
