SPRING2014 19 term-savings are now some of the strongest reasons to consider LED lighting. Facility operators will also want to consider aesthetics. Many factors determine whether your facility is vibrant, spotty or dim. One is the distance between your lights and the court or field, notwithstanding any netting. Another is the size and the shape of light emitted, and how it's adjusted. A third is simply based on personal taste. The life expectancy of lights is definitely an important factor when considering a new or retrofit system. Lighting maintenance can be expensive, time-consuming and frustrating. There is little more annoying than having lights burn out at an inopportune time and having to wait days or weeks before a broken fixture can be fixed or replaced. Compared to traditional metal halides, which are built to last approximately 15,000 hours, quality LEDs will last more than 100,000 hours. Depending on your hours of operation, this would mean replacing your lights every 15-20 years, as opposed to every two or three. Safety is a critical consideration for any venue, especially those that draw large crowds, have parking lots or parking structures, and feature reaction-based team sports, where being able to see clearly in a potentially dangerous situation is key. The last thing that goalkeepers want to see is a bright light in their eyes when they should be watching out for a soccer ball zipping toward them. Choosing a lighting system that provides consistent light in a reliable way will ensure the safety of your customers and staff. The peace of mind in knowing that your lights will work, rain or shine, both inside and outside of your facility is a tremendous added bonus. A number of lighting companies offer a variety of options, so it is important to contact as many as possible when considering a new system. As costs vary widely, it is important to obtain a number of quotes. It is also a good idea to talk to fellow facility operators. One of the many benefits of USIndoor membership is being part of a network and asking questions like, "What kind of lights do you have? How do you like them?"
