north smithfield blackstone woonsocket edition | valley breeze | febrUary 27-march 5, 2014 in our schools 19 NORTH SMITHFIELD – Students from Natalie O'Brien's Honors in American Government class have won Rhode Island's We the People state competition for an 8th consecutive year and will be holding a number of fundraisers to help defray the costs of a trip to the national contest. On Feb. 8, thirty-two fresh- men from North Smithfield High School received accolades from the judges and parents who watched the presentations. The winning class will now trav- el to Washington, D.C. to com- pete in the National Invitational. We the People is a program that empowers young people and emphasizes the importance of active citizenship while pro- moting their interest in politics. O'Brien's classes have been taking part in the program since 2004, which requires that students become experts on a myriad of historical and con- stitutional topics and defend their positions before a panel of judges. The National Invitational will take place from April 4 through April 8 at George Mason University in Virginia. In addi- tion to competing for three days and sharing their views with prestigious judges from across the country, the students will also have the opportunity to explore Washington D.C. and witness government in action. In order to help cover the costs for the trip, the students will be hosting several fundrais- ing events. On March 4 from 5 to 9 p.m. the students will hold Gator's Pub Night, with 20 percent of the cost of each bill going to the program, including orders at Lumberjacks Pizza and all take-out is items. The students will also be on hand selling raffle tickets for a variety of prizes including: a weekend in New Hampshire; a pair of tickets to a pre-season New England Patriots game; a Google Nexus 7 16gb Tablet; New England Patriots Rob Gronkowski game jersey; New England Patriots Bill Belichick pullover hoodie and New England Patriots baseball cap and T-shirt. Raffle tickets can also be purchased at NSHS, Leeway Hardware, and by current stu- dents involved in the program. The students will also hold a car wash at North Smithfield High School on March 23 from 12 to 3 p.m. Alumni of the program will also be supporting the trip by participating in the Leeway Grand Re-opening on April 5. In final preparation for the National Finals a dress rehearsal will be held on April 1 at North Smithfield Middle School and will be open to the public.
