COMING SOON
DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
Inspired by a true story and starring the award winning Matthew McConaughey alongside Jennifer
Garner, this fi lm follows the fast-paced life of Ron Woodroof who delves into the world of unap-
proved drugs, when he discovers that he is HIV infected and only has 30 days left to live.
The fi lm provides a combination of emotive insight into the lives of HIV su erers alongside a per-
fectly crafted script packed full of angry sarcasm and outrageous one-liners. As it is set in the 80s;
the audience are given a chance to look at the contemporary issue of homophobia at a time when it
was overlooked, through the eyes of a heterosexual racist. Ron, stubbornly refuses to comprehend
the fact of his close looming death and seeks out other ways to prolong his life; drug therapy from
other countries. The formation of his club which invites other victims of the illness to join him in his
use of these imported drugs, leads him to dabble with the "queers" he used to hate.
In essence, the fi lm is a character study of the lead role, looking at the length that victims of life-
threatening illnesses go to, in order to preserve what little time they have left. Yet, the violent stub-
bornness to live that McConaughey's character has, makes this fi lm stand out against the typical
dreary long-term illness fi lm.
Outrageous and emotional; Dallas Buyers Club is the one to watch this weekend.
