Houseboaters who want to wet a line face two options when it comes to fishing: they can angle from the deck of the houseboat or use a separate watercraft to take them out onto the water. Because the fishing situation and techniques are so similar, for the sake of this subject, I include fishing from the dock with the stay-on-board angling option. Auxiliary boats used for fishing from a houseboat often include everything from kayaks to personal watercraft, and I have used both personally—and successfully—to get away from the Mothership for some peace and fishing. Many houseboaters employ traditional fishing and pleasure boats for their angling enjoyment as well, towing the craft along on their cruises or arranging for the boats to be delivered by friends, family members or fishing guides when it's time to "Go Fish." Most of the techniques I cover in this column can be used whether you are fishing from the houseboat itself or using a separate boat. This month I will stick with the basics of angling from the houseboat.
