GoldanDBlack express • volume 24, express 23 • 25 BY STACY CLARDIE SClardie@GoldandBlack.com W ith spring ball starting Thursday, Coach Darrell Hazell has targeted several ar- eas on both sides of the ball for improvement. Part of that will be with adjusting to some potential scheme changes, too, as he said the offense "probably" will be more spread out and the defense will use both four- and three-man fronts. "Defensively, obviously, I want them to be very sound," Hazell said on "Gold and Black LIVE" on Wednesday. "I want them to be gap sound. I want them to play aggressively, and I want them to run to the foot- ball. It's that simple. I don't care what you're calling, but be sound and run to the football. "Offensively, we have to come out of this spring execut- ing much better. That means our base run plays, we've got to be able to execute vs. all the different fronts. We want to be able to throw that ball with tre- mendous efficiency." Looking for Leaders Through Purdue's 6 a.m. workouts, Hazell has seen lead- ers emerge, one of his "musts" for the 2014 season. "That's one of the things we begged for last year," Hazell said. "We needed some leaders, and now they're finally starting to step up." So much so that Hazell may actually make a change to his policy. He always has had only se- niors on the ballot for captains, but after seeing juniors Robert Kugler, Frankie Williams and Dolapo Macarthy emerge, Ha- zell may change his approach. There have been seniors, though, too, who have im- pressed the second-year coach, mentioning linebacker Sean Robinson and safety Landon Feichter. "Some of those guys are re- ally take ownership of our foot- ball team," Hazell said. Position battLes Few starting spots are safe after a 1-11 season. Hazell even called quar- terback an "open competition," though incumbent Danny Etling has gotten considerable backing from the coaching staff.
