GoldanDBlack express • volume 24, express 24 • 13 BY KYLE CHARTERS KCharters@GoldandBlack.com T he Boilermakers' stay in the Big Ten Tournament was short, as they were bounced in their first game by Iowa on Friday. The loss broke a season- high six game winning streak and was Purdue's first since KK Houser was injured in early February. In the following, we take a look back at Purdue's only game last week. S During the winning streak, the Boiler- makers were suc- cessful in part due to holding on to the ball, turning it over only 12.8 times per game. But that went away against the Hawkeyes; Purdue had 12 turnovers in the first half alone, con- tributing to the B o i l e r m a k e r s being up only four when it felt as though it could be a much, much wider margin. Eight more turnovers fol- lowed in the sec- ond half. Twice, Purdue called a timeout to set up a critical offensive posses- sion in the final four min- utes, and both times a turnover came almost immediately. The Boilers were trying to get the ball inside, only to have it skip away. Without the scoring punch that Houser provides, Purdue cannot afford to give away pos- sessions. It proved as much against Iowa. S Purdue has the weapons to be dominant inside, but isn't always getting the ball there. Late in the first half against the Hawkeyes, when Iowa's post players were on the bench ei- ther in foul trouble or injured, Purdue couldn't take full advan- tage. Bad entry passes were a major part of the problem; if the ball can't get inside, then it can't be scored inside. At the time, the Boilermak- ers held a nine-point advantage, but instead of it expanding with Iowa in frontcourt foul trouble, it shrunk. The margin was down to four by the break. S Camille Redmon has to stay out of foul trouble. The 6-foot-4 center is a game-changer on defense, be- cause she can not only block shots but adjust others. She had three blocks in only 11 minutes against Iowa, but her four fouls limited her late. The foul trouble limited her time, and her aggressiveness, and let Iowa dominate late in the game on the inside. When Purdue's at its best de- fensively, Redmon is allowed to work inside to clean up shots in the paint. S Purdue shot better than 50 percent, had seven three- pointers, hit most of its free throws and played even on the boards. But it lost. Cut down on the turnovers and that's unlikely to happen again early in the NCAA Tournament. S Hayden Hamby's contri- butions came after the game was decided, but she bombed in a couple long three-pointers. The sophomore's confi- dence is growing, which can only bode well for the tourney and the next two years. j Flash Forward Opponent: TBA in NCAA Tournament Location: Mackey Arena (West Lafayette) When: 11 a.m./1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 22 Notables: Purdue finds out its first-round NCAA Tournament opponent on Selection Monday, March 17. … The second-round game in Mackey Arena is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 24. … Purdue last hosted NCAA Tournament games two seasons ago, beating South Dakota State in Round 1 before losing to South Carolina in the second round. … The Boilermakers' all-time record in Mackey Arena in the NCAA Tournament is 19-7.
