Big Ten Breakdown The Big Ten just wrapped one of its most competitive seasons. Since the league went to an 18-game schedule in 1975, this season was only the third time that the last-place conference team (Purdue) had five victories. Eleven of the 12 schools beat a ranked team this season. And, seemingly, anything can happen. The final day of regular-sea- son play certainly showed that: Nebraska beat ninth-ranked Wis- consin and Ohio State beat No. 22 Michigan State. Following is a breakdown of this week's Big Ten Tournament, including thumbnails of the top contenders. S No. 1 seed Michigan. It was a pretty impressive run for the Wolverines to their first outright league championship since 1986, considering they didn't have the services of all-league player Mitch McGary (back). But Nik Stauskas stepped up, scoring 17.0 points per game dur- ing league play, as Michigan was the Big Ten's No. 2 scoring team. The Wolverines shot a blister- ing 49 percent in league play and also led the conference in free throw shooting. It could be a tough task to slow them down. S No. 2 seed Wisconsin.
