I really didn't choose to go into the salon business; it wasn't what I wanted to do profession- ally. Art was my life. I studied fine art in college, but quickly realized I was run- ning out of money. I knew that in order to make a living as an artist, I needed to be the best in my class, have money, and have a lot of luck on my side. Since I come from six generations of hair styl- ists, my father persuaded me to go to hair school, which he offered to pay for. It was there that I discovered color, cut, and style can together create a wearable art form that gives me satisfaction. Where did you study? I watched my father and grandfather cut and style hair for years. So when I enrolled in Blaine Beauty School, I already had a little bit of an edge over other students. But, I probably learned more from styling classes I took after graduation. I studied with all the greats, from Del- laria to Vidal Sassoon in Boston, New York, and California. What do you consider to be most im- portant about the work you do? I think the most important thing about being a hairdresser is translating how people want to be seen. It's like giving someone a tattoo. Most tattoos reflect people's personalities. Hair does, too, but unlike a tattoo, you can change it. I've become an interpreter of clients' personalities and lifestyles. What do you think people remem- ber about your salon and services? I think clients remember the salon for its modern city feel—it's relaxing, simple, clean, and friendly. I designed it with an art gallery in mind. I showcase and sell my own artwork as well as the work of local artists. As for my services—they are consistent and precise. I strive to be able to give the right cut and color over and over again. I try to obtain perfection every time. What do you want readers to know about what you do and who you are? First and foremost I am an artist, so for me, every client is a work of art. They come to me with a unique set of problems, and I solve them with creativity and skill. anthonydavidburlington.com q + a A Cut Above Anthony Vitale transforms a passion for fine art into a career spent creating wearable art at Anthony David Salon.
