board, as well as a devoted group of volunteers, is involved in steering the organization. "We are very much a working board," says Isabella. "People automatically seem to find their niche and take on that job." Everything from overseeing the box office affairs, finances, and legal services, to fundraising and publicity is handled by the group of nine, each of whom takes a turn working the front of the house during productions. One of the many things the board was able to accomplish was a fundraising campaign to install air-conditioning in the space, which extended the theatre's season and made everyone much more comfortable. "We had a very generous matching grant that enabled us to reach our goal quickly," says Isabella. TASN put that air-conditioning to good use; this year will mark the third season of its Summer Classics series—staged readings of great plays by renowned playwrights. This season is expect- ed to include works by the likes of Eugene O'Neill, August Strindberg, Molière, and W. Somerset Maugham. The switch to operating as a nonprofit has also encour- aged a wide variety of new people to get involved with The Actors Studio—not only actors, but people who just want to be involved in the theatre, from set painting to fundraising to running the box office, says Clopton, adding, "We need volunteers in every capacity." The studio has experienced encouraging growth in audience attendance over the past few years, and in such a passionate community, more office space and perhaps more performance space may be in the future. For now, though, Clopton is happy with his place in the port city. "Historically, during every century, Newbury- port has been home to great writers. Who knows why, but they are here and they are working," says Clopton. "It is an amazing community filled with amazingly creative people." newburyportacting.org ● n 90 Theatre ne 10 Post Office Ave, Andover, MA 978.409.1541 www.soleamour.com beautiful shoes extraordinary comfor t beautiful Trina Turk Aquatalia Pura Lopez Anyi Lu Rebecca Minkoff Via Spiga Robindira Unsworth Sigerson Morrison Calleen Cordero Annabel Ingall Monserat de Lucca Gentle Souls Alane Weissman LizaBeth Alice+Olivia Jack Rogers AGL extraordinary comfor t extraordinary comfor t extraordinary Trina Turk Aquatalia Pura Lopez Anyi Lu beautiful beautiful In addition to workshops and spoken word events, TASN will be producing two major works this year: Twelve Angry Women will be performed May 31 through June 15. A collaboration with Shine Productions, a theatre company dedicated to producing plays with strong female roles, the play is a reimagining of the successful film 12 Angry Men. In October, TASN will present Lisa Kron's play titled, Well—a funny and touching comedy about mothers and daughters, mind over body, social activism, and theatre itself.
