MEMBER RESOURCES Overheard on E-Groups
ILTA is proud to offer one of the most useful — and most used — resources in legal IT for networking and learning from your peers, the ILTA E-Groups. Because hundreds of members take advantage of E-Groups every day, you can search or browse E-Groups to find discussions on a wide variety of legal IT topics. And remember, you can post any legal IT-related question. . . and we mean any question. Chances are, another ILTA member has the answer. Log on at egroups.iltanet.org.
Subject: Skype
We currently don’t allow Skype to be used at our firm to avoid the additional traffic, support concerns and potential privacy concerns. Is Skype allowed on your firm network?

We allow it. There are some parts of the world where voice service is too expensive to be practical with an alternative like Skype available. We’re even going to look at a Skype gateway for our ShoreTel system, so people can use their desk phones.
Kevin J. Sullivan Director of Technology Cohen & Grigsby, P.C.
We allow Skype on our network in a limited capacity. We block Skype from being utilized as an IM or file transfer client, but we have allowed attorneys to use Skype at the request of their clients. We offer different options to discourage the use of non- commercial solutions such as Skype.

Thanks for pointing out the option to block IM and file transfer!
