The senior big man did
everything right at Purdue
from his first day on cam-
pus, but his limitations
made him capable of only
so much on game days. His
was an example that could have made a
difference behind the scenes if others were
paying attention. As a player, he is replace-
able. As a teammate, he'll very much be
missed.
Errick Peck 32
F • 6-6 • Sr. (5)
In his only season at
Purdue, neither the pro-
gram nor the player got
quite as much out of it as
hoped, but Peck did help
the Boilermakers win a few
games, including the very first one, when
his three-pointer against Northern Ken-
tucky was the biggest play of the game,
arguably. Peck never really found a consis-
tent niche with Purdue, it didn't seem like.
Bryson Scott 12
G • 6-1 • Fr.
Scott really, really struggled
in the point guard role dur-
ing the Big Ten season, but
his difficulties weren't as
much about his position as
they were his composure
and decision-making. He'll need to make
strides in those areas, because Purdue may
need him back at the point next season.
From what he has said, he is dying to get
back to work, and as coaches, that's music
to your ears.
Basil Smotherman 5
F• 6-5 • Fr.
The freshman showed flash-
es this season during what
was a pretty successful year
when all was said and done.
Purdue needs him to be as
active as possible — be-
cause when he's active, his elite athleticism
shows up — and those jump shots he
made at the end of the year were a positive
sign. He has a chance to be a strong defen-
sive player but has a long way to go.
Rapheal Davis 35
G • 6-5 • So.
As of right now, Purdue
has two returning up-
perclassmen and just five
scholarship players return-
ing, which is obviously far
from ideal. Leadership is
going to be paramount.
Davis played his best basketball at the end
of this season, but as important as his play
moving forward will be his leadership. He is
the example Purdue wants its many young
players to follow and the junior-to-be may
now be empowered to assert himself with
no older players to defer to.
A.J. Hammons 20
C • 7-0 • So.
While he is still a healthy
margin from reaching his
potential, Hammons will
have a decision to make
about the NBA. Purdue
had better hope he stays,
because it needs him
badly. If he's back for his junior season, he
will be the centerpiece of Purdue's entire
team, with guards around better at, and
more eager to, get him the ball.
Ronnie Johnson 3
G • 6-0 • So.
The point guard has al-
ready been released from
his scholarship and will
transfer, as the inner strife
that assuredly plagued
Purdue's locker room has
come to light. If it seemed
throughout the season that the point
guard wasn't always on the same page as
his coaches, it's because he wasn't. Purdue
loses a talented player here and starts over
at point guard from an experience stand-
point, but an unhappy player returning in a
position of prominence, with five freshmen
around to be influenced, might have been
an even bigger issue.
Kendall Stephens 21
G • 6-6 • Fr.
The Big Ten All-Freshman
Team pick got better as the
season went on and left it
as a good player. Next year,
he can be very good, per-
haps on his way to great.
But he has to work. This
offseason, he'll be in position to do so, with
the benefit of his health. After undergoing
shoulder surgery in high school, Stephens
spent this whole season getting caught up,
making his play even more impressive.
Terone Johnson 0
G • 6-2 • Sr.
Johnson was a good, pro-
ductive player for Purdue
in his four seasons in the
program, but will be as-
sociated with the program
taking a step backward
during his upperclassmen
years, fair or not. Clearly this season was
difficult on him, especially in light of the
now-known issues between his family and
coaches, which led to his young brother's
transfer. Awkward.
