"I wasn't expecting it," said Stephens, whose 64 triples fell two short of E'Twaun Moore's freshman record (in fewer games and minutes). "I came into this year really just wanting to contrib- ute. ... But it's definitely been one of my goals when I was getting ready to come to Purdue for my freshman year and I'm definitely thankful for it." SIMPSON DEALING Jay Simpson, now retired from basketball after being diagnosed with an often-fatal heart condi- tion, spoke publicly for the first time about the episode last week, calling himself "blessed" for his ail- ment to have been discovered when it was. As for his basketball career ending, that's the difficult part, the redshirt freshman big man said. "Basketball, that's pretty much all I knew," he said. "That's all I ever did growing up and for it to just be gone like that, it's mind- blowing. It's hard. It's going to take some time to get over, but I'll get through it." Simpson, who doesn't yet know what other limitations will be placed on him due to the con- dition, said he intends to remain at Purdue to see his education SPEAkEr cAPturES bASkEtbALL MEDIA MANIA tItLE Jon Speaker has won the 2014 basketball portion of the Media Mania competition after a strong week of picks during the Big Ten Tour- nament. For his success this winter, Speaker has earned the Golden Typewriter. Speaker was also the winner for the Big Ten Tournament week after correctly picking three of the five games for 11 points. Kelly Kitchel also finished with 11 points, but Speaker's tiebreaking guess was closer to the point total in the Purdue-Ohio State game.
