Prince will keep the start- ing right tackle spot locked when transfer Corey Clements arrives to Purdue. But Prince doesn't want to hear about the fall. He's eager to seize on the chance he has now in spring ball, showing coaches he de- serves snaps. "The opportunity is great," Prince said. "It's something where things just get thrust upon you, and you've got to rise up to it. I'm happy for the challenge. If I succeed now, I'm happy for the challenge come fall. I feel more than ready to fill the shoes of people who came before me, and I feel more than ready to compete with the other players who are coming and who are here. It's all about earning your position." Prince is getting a chance because both of Purdue's start- ing tackles, Justin Kitchens and Kevin Pamphile, graduated. Jack DeBoef is working with the first-team offense on the left side this spring. Of the four offensive tack- les currently on the roster, Prince has at least gotten some game action. Not that they were memo- rable. Prince, succinctly, said they "weren't great," and he's been stuck on one particular snap against Notre Dame. When Kitch- ens' helmet came off, forcing him to miss a play, coaches trotted Prince in from the sideline. Prince got beat on the third-down play, forcing an in- complete pass under pressure. "It was a rude awakening," Prince said. "I had no idea I was going to go in that game. I was cold, unstretched. I had a chal- lenge before me, and I didn't do my job to the best of my abilities. I just want to sort of repent for that this year. "I thought about that for weeks, that particular play, I still think about it. It was a great opportunity and I succumbed to it rather than conquered it. That's definitely something I think about when I compete my position."
