Last week, Richards spoke with reporters for the first time since the incident. "Definitely what I did was wrong," he said. "I apologize for everything that I did to the uni- versity, to my football team, to my parents, my family. "But Coach Hazell is handling it right now, and whatever the repercussions are, we'll find out. Right now, I'm just focusing on football and grades." Hazell has said he hasn't de- cided yet whether Richards will be suspended for games in 2014. Richards' legal sentence included 364 days of probation and 32 hours of community service. When B.J. Knauf was arrested on suspicion of theft in Septem- ber, Hazell suspended him for two games. On the mend Perhaps the most significant injury sustained during spring ball has been running back Bran- don Cottom's nagging hamstring, which forced him to miss nearly all of the first five practices. Cottom, who tweaked the hamstring during the first practice, tried to come back to do some work on March 10 but was unable. Perhaps a full week's worth of rest over spring break will help Cottom, who expected to get a chance to prove this spring he belongs in the rotation. "We're trying to be smart before the break and hopefully be able to get 10 practices out of him after the break," Hazell said. "Obviously if you can't practice, it hurts him. But those other guys are doing a nice job. Those young guys are doing a really nice job. So sometimes you get an opportunity to see other things that you might not ordinarily see." Cornerback Da'Wan Hunte, receiver Bilal Marshall, lineback- er Andy James Garcia and de- fensive tackle Chuck Ayres are among the other spring injuries. Receivers Cameron Posey and Knauf continue to rehab from pre-spring surgeries, and tight end Matt Burke still is coming off an ACL injur y from last year. j Tom Campbell As a senior, Taylor Richards knows he is looked at as a leader. Last week, he apologized for a mis- demeanor offense of OWI.
