R Edwards' high school career ended
Wednesday night in Cincinnati in a 53-50
loss to nationally ranked Moeller in the
Ohio state tournament's regional round.
Edwards finished with 19 points and
13 boards — he made 7-of-16 shots, but
an uncharacteristic 3-of-10 from the foul
line — as Middletown High School rallied
late from a near double-digit deficit, but fell
short in the final minutes.
"I'm so proud of our guys for fighting
back," said Edwards, who was met after the
game outside his locker room by Purdue
coaches Matt Painter and Greg Gary. "We
fought with courage."
First-year Middies coach Mark Baker's
team finished 19-7.
"His leadership," Baker said of what
stood out about his one year coaching
the Purdue recruit. "Any time you have
your best player buy in as a new coach to
everything you want to do, it's huge. It lets
you lay the foundation for the program,
because all the other guys are going to
look to him for leadership. He believed
from Day 1. He led them by example. He
carried us. He was huge for me.
"He's an exceptional player and he's
had a hell of a career at Middletown. I'm
always — always — going to be con-
nected to Vince Edwards because of
what he helped me do this year with this
program."
Edwards finished the season averaging
22.3 points, 12.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists.
Painter and Gary were also there to see
Moeller junior big man Nate Fowler, a play-
er Purdue has watched closely in the Class
of 2015.
R Haas was named first-team all-state
by the Alabama Sports Writers Association
after averaging about 20.5 points, 10-plus
rebounds and 4.5 blocked shots for Hokes
Bluff High School this season.
