WHERE ARE THEY NOW? BY JOHN BORTON G ary Grant's recent selection to the U-M Athletics Hall of Honor puts the official stamp on the accom- plishments of an all-time great Michi- gan point guard. For longtime deni- zens of Crisler Center, "The General" required no extra designation. Grant glided across Big Ten basket- ball courts four straight years, slip- ping into the nightmares of ball han- dlers and defenders more often than not. He came away with a Michigan- record 731 assists and 300 steals, both marks that might stand forever in a new era of early NBA entries. The owner of two Big Ten champi- onships and four NCAA Tournament appearances saw his own chances to bolt for the pros prior to using up his eligibility. He's glad he didn't, for many reasons. "I loved the University of Michi- gan," Grant reflected. "I thought I'd have a better opportunity to be more prepared. Also, I wanted to get my degree. "My mom told us we all needed to get our degree. I have four brothers, and all five of us have our degrees. That was the most important thing for my mom and my family, so I did it. I stayed in." Staying meant becoming a cham- pion — twice — and still not for- feiting anything in professional basketball. "It worked out well for me," Grant WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
