Then, watch how the other letters look in the word to see if they are decent to work with or if you will need to edit them individually. To create an original script font, the best way to start is to look at trimming off unnecessary pieces. Then, create several shapes that will ultimately become embellishments to the font. If this process seems difficult, look at other designs and get some ideas on how they used fonts in a similar manner to create a cool design. In three steps, the script can be trimmed, modified, and then adjusted with the new pieces so that it looks like a completely new logo element. You can even add some embellishments to the inside of the type using a power clip of an inside contour and a pinstripe fill for some sporting effects (see Figure 5). Developing an original gothic font There is a big demand for functional gothic fonts in logos, graphics, T-shirts, and tattoos. The challenge with most gothic fonts is that the uppercase letters tend to be illegible, too ornate, or they don't work well with the rest of the lettering in a design. Gothic fonts tend to have a lot of embellishments, so the challenge is to create something new using an existing font in a minimal time. To create a new letter, study of the rest of the characters in the font. Type out all of the uppercase and lowercase letters and then look them over to see if there are pieces that can be used to create a new letter (see Figures 6 and 7). putting the fonts back together When you create a successful new font, take a moment and create a swipe file from your design and save it in a resource file. The time you have taken will likely yield several design pieces. If you have the pieces and method that you used previously, then you can quickly look at editing a new version of your typeface without going back to the drawing board and starting over. The benefits of controlling the fonts in your designs will reap many benefits above and beyond creating original logos. It is surprising how often, in the course of simple production work, that a type style may have a poorly-designed character or illegible element that will need editing to look professional. In those cases, you can quickly edit the font element and no longer will you have to settle for less-than- ideal typographic elements in your shirt designs.
