It may be cliché, but it is no doubt true. Your network is the key to production. To serving your customers. To making a sale. But networking, especially in this global economy where more transactions are done via click, email, or even text, isn't an easy task. So we have to get creative. How can you keep up with all of the different products, supplies, technologies and substrates, let alone all of the various companies that offer what you need to keep your business running? One way, the path that you may not even know you're already on, is through this very Resource Directory. The purpose of this manual is to have our collection of contributors teach you how to do what you need to do, then to provide you with the resources that supply the tools you need to do what you now have the knowledge to do. The tutorials, products, company descriptions, and category listings in this issue are our way of hosting a sort of absentee mixer. Like a networking event without all of the socializing. As your host, consider the listings our way of introducing you around the room to the key players in the industry. As the conduit between the suppliers and the doers in the industry, our task to keep you connected is not small. So we have to get even more creative. We wanted to make it easier for you to find each other—and in doing so, find what you need and what you need to know. We realize that this calls for a little more action than our pages can support. In this spirit, our parent company decided to take this concept online, and built The NBM Network (, an interactive business-to-business e-commerce website created to serve the graphics community. It connects professionals in three areas: contract services, a product guide, and tips and how- to tutorials. Think of it as sort of a co-op community; a place to find products, seek help with a project, and learn new techniques. So here, we are your hosts in an online soirée of sorts… except our virtual party for all of you like-minded professionals effectively helps you get things done. Does this fulfill our obligation to bring the industry together through education and collaboration? Maybe. But, we are, after all, human—albeit a certain breed of humans that pander to the quirks of the embellished apparel trade. And humans need human interaction… like, in person interaction. This is where The NBM Show comes in to finish off our networking trifecta. The event animates our pursuit of bringing education to the masses and making meaningful connections throughout the applied graphics trade. With this particular vehicle, after hours of educational sessions and true face time in the exhibit hall, we host an actual party, where we can physically introduce you to those who can strengthen your business. The opportunities are available, no matter what level of interaction you are comfortable with, to build your network and be more successful in your field. I hope you take them. And, I hope to meet you through one, if not all of our mediums soon. Emily Kay Thompson Build a network 6 | Printwear M i d - M a rc h 20 1 4 How To... PW_MidMarch14.indd 6 2/28/14 12:59 PM
