She mainly plays second base, although McDonald is looking at other possibilities. Also ready to take the ball on the hill are 7th-graders Mackenzie Vallely and Brooke Turnbull. Both have experience in local leagues and have won state championships as members of the Cumberland 10-year-old all- star team. "Jocelyn will be our number one pitcher, but I would say that our other pitchers will get the ball about half the time, and it will be against good teams because we want to get them ready," said McDonald. "Both throw the ball well," There are ongoing battles for other positions. Chloe Kessler, an 8th-grader who is new to the school team, but who was on the team that traveled to Bristol, is battling Kathryn Houle and a pair of 6th-graders for the third base job. McDonald said he likes Kessler's batting ability, and it is likely that if she does win the job at third base, she will be at another position. "There's a couple of 6th- graders, Olivia Sarmento and Caitlyn Oliveira, who have been very impressive defensive- ly, and I want to see what they can do once we get outdoors," said McDonald. "Oliveira can also catch, which would allow us to move Renae Lacroix to an infield position." Vallely appears to have the jump on the shortstop position, although Emma Petrich is in the running. Carr will likely be at second base, and Abby Dalpe, who swings a mean bat, is also in the infield mix. Sixth-grader Kirsten Mahalaris, who can also pitch, is being looked at for a number or positions. First base is up for grabs with the prime contenders in the early going being Kessler, Emily Hendricks, Bodington, when she isn't pitching, and Christina Doucette. Kaitlyn D'Abrosca, Holly Pashnik, Makayla Chandler, Remy McDermott, Paige Cook, Cameron Cronin, Sydney Crowe and Emma Petrich, along with the players who don't start in the infield, will all be given a strong look for out- field positions. McDonald pointed out that there is a significant rule change this year that places the pitch- ing rubber 43 feet from home plate, an extension from the previous 40 feet. "That could be a significant difference for girls this age, but I think our pitchers have already adjusted because they all have been throwing all winter," said McDonald. "We know it will be a strong chal- lenge, right in our own division. Our goal right now is to play well enough to make the play- offs, work hard and improve as we go." vALLey bReeze PHoto by PAuL R. duboIs Leading the North Cumberland Middle School girls softball team this season on its quest to make it four consecutive state championships are, from left, captains rEnaE laCroix, JoCElyn Bodington, coach John mCdonald, and captain Cassidy Carr. soFtBall from Page 16 NORTH SMITHFIELD – The North Smithfield Women's Softball League is accepting registration for its 2014 season.
