HOLY SATURDAY The family par- ticipates in the Italian tradition of "Hour of the Mother." With a black veil placed over Mary's head, the chil - dren mourn and pray with her for one hour. EASTER SUNDAY The children stay up late after Easter Vigil and wake up after a few hours of sleep. The family races to the tomb in the backyard only to find it is empty. They dis- cover that Christ is truly risen! HOLY THURSDAY The Letey family attends Mass together. GOOD FRIDAY The Leteys relive the burial of Christ by wrapping their Jesus icon in white linen. The children throw rose petals as George processes with the icon to place it under a makeshift tomb in their backyard. BY NISSA LAPOINT A t George and Darlene Letey's home, Easter is like Christmas. In the early morning hours, at times in their Sunday best, the Letey children wake their parents eager to go outside and see if Jesus rose from the tomb. "We open the door and they are running outside," Darlene said. "I barely have time to get my camera out." The children go to the make- shift tomb the family created in their backyard, looking for the icon of Jesus. They discover Jesus is not there, just as Mary Magdalene and the apostles Peter and John discover the empty tomb in the Gospel. Mary Imelda, 11, John Mary, 9, and Mary Veronica, 3, come inside their Louisville home to find presents and Easter bas- kets brimming with candy. Throughout Holy Week lead- ing up to Easter, the family practices traditions and devo- tions adopted from around the world to make Christ's passion and resurrection a tangible experience.
